The Elder Scrolls 4 takes action in the realm of Cyrodiil. The story begins with the main character being in prison. To your surprise, you are approached by the emperor, Uriel Septim VII, who is attempting to flee from assassins who are trying to kill him.
The emperor shows you a secret passage out of the cell, and leads you out, however before he can escape himself he is mortally wounded. He hands you the Amulet of Kings, and before he dies he asks you to find his heir and give the amulet to him.
