The Good:

-Superb Graphics
-The best AI we ever seen in a FPS
-Makes you think you’re there, gives you a feeling like none felt before in a game
-Very strong story with great voices and narration
-Amazing teamwork from the AI
-You’ll love the puzzles that appear during the heated action

The bad:

-It’s a rather short episode
-makes you once again wait for the answers till the next episode

Half Life 2: Episode 1 starts a new way in which Valve teases us and gives us answers. This is the first episode from a long series that will come, each episode leaving us in the air. Ok so we started to play the game with an info about how Alyx and Gordon survived the explosion and escaped the G-Man. So how are things now? Well the city is at the point of another explosion and you have to find a way of getting out of the blast radius, not to good huh?

The game is very familiar because you came back to the City17 from the previous part but has a lot of new elements that please you too.

In comparison with Half Life 2, Episode 1 brings more action in the game (bleeding limbs, ruptured corpses, ever reloading shotguns and all that 'nice’ things) and a few graphic improvements. For example HL2 Episode 1 supports high-dynamic range lighting technology (HDR) which, if your video card supports it can bring some obvious changes to the landscapes and interior of buildings. For example we tested the game without HDR and with HDR, the second time we saw some new outstanding shadows and lightning that give the game more finesse.

Ok so we where trying to escape the city, kill zombies that charge you with a grenade in their hand, soldiers and insects, the game from start to end can be finished in 4-6 hours this depending on if you’re a beginner in Half-Life 2 or a veteran urging for more. Episode 1 maintains the way Half-Life got us used to by combining pure action with intelligent puzzles, this way keeping you busy mentally while you have fun, it didn’t happen only once to be dodging bullets and monsters while thinking how to get on the other side of that damn door.

Along the game you will be making team with Alyx which has an amazing AI. In many occasions we almost forgot that she’s just a computer AI because of the way you protect her from monsters or in scenes where it’s dark and she can’t see where to shoot so you have to look after each-other, plus her voice and mimics are extraordinary, she almost like the real thing.

Half-Life 2: Episode 1 is a game made with passion and devotion and we are sad because there are few games like this on the market. It’s something made at another level, something that gets better with each episode, like the commands given to the citizens in HL2 which now are replaced by better AI, the introduction of HDR and a continuation of the storyline which is not in any way weaker then the last. All these form a superb game, wonderfully crafted.

We give it a 10
