The Good:
-Superb graphics with gourges lights and textures -Very fun single player campaign -Great inovations in gameplay
The Bad:
-The game is rather easy -Some problems with the AI
Half-Life was without doubt one of the best shooters ever made, it revolutionized all First Person Shooters bringing immersive storyline, leaving open the possibility for modes, based on the game’s engine, like the Counter-Strike phenomenon.
Its sequel does that and more, much more. Half-Life 2 continues the story exactly from the end of part 1. Guess who you’ll be playing? You guessed correctly, Gordon Freeman the 1 man commando physicist. As you surely remember at the end of Half-Life, Gordon Freeman had a choice, either work for the G-Man or go count flowers in Heaven. Since Half-Life 2 appeared it’s obvious what Gordon chose.
You’re life in the game starts in a train just like in the first part only this time the station is City 17. You arrive there only to see a devastating sight where people are gathered like in concentrating camps and harshly punished with energy sticks. From what it seems an enemy called the Combine has conquered the planet and installed a human government to carry out its orders. All over the city propaganda is displayed on huge video screens, the police take the ones that don’t obey and tortures them to find out if they are loyal, people look like they are not alive, like they don’t have a will of their own.
Half-Life 2 keeps its original recipe, a little puzzle, lots of action, all mixed up with a Sci-Fi adventure and this made it again a superb game. As you complete level after level you will notice that the loading screens are very short giving the game a great fluency, Half-Life 2 also implements an autosave function that keeps your worries down about saving.
The graphics is outstanding, with great lights, textures and superb water. Also bringing cohesiveness to the game are the body-mechanics of the AI which falls in a realistic way, bullets act on them very realistic, and they walk/run very natural. Although the AI is rather good it won’t bring any real challenge in general, of course with few exceptions like some giant ant-warriors which will charge at you until one of you dies and believe me, you will consume loads of ammunition on him if you want to live.
The fun in this game is top quality although is a fast paced story that hardly lets you breath. Vehicles bring even more fun because of their speed and loose controls and the jumps you do with a buggy or a speed boat are surely worth it.
One thing which makes Half-Life 2 different from the other games and much more fun too is the implementation of physics, very real physics. Of course you can use this in your advantage by lifting metallic crates in front of you to be protected by bullets or use your gravity gun to lift larger objects and then throw them on your enemies. But your power may become your weakness because your enemies can use and throw objects too, and you don’t want someone hit you with a metallic bar.
The sound is good with music that changes through the game as enemies change. The effects are really good, impressive sometimes like the Combine ships that give you a really sci-fi experience. The war atmosphere with bullets flying all over the place and grenades exploding, spider robots decimating the humans, all these are mixed perfectly What Valve succeeded was to create a world that 'feels’ real, sound real and make you feel part of something and all that based on the new Source engine.
This is a Shooter that shouldn’t be missed, and I really mean it.
We give it a 9.5
